PRACTICE NEWS We try to send out a practice newsletter every 3 months to all our regular clients and will post the most current newsletter below as well as using this page for any newsflashes which may be of interest to our clients at large. We are trying to set up an email newsletter system and to this end if you would like to be included on this forthcoming project please send a message to office@bvec.co.uk stating your name and email contact details. We will not pass on any email addresses to a 3rd party for any purposes. We regret that this service will only be open to clients already registered with the clinic.********************************************************added on 29th March 2007********************************************************** CHANGE TO TRADING TERMS We have decided that from the beginning of April we are changing from being a partnership to becoming a limited company. This should not in any way affect the standard of service which our clients get from our business and they should not notice any difference apart from some minor administrative changes. It should enable us to increase investment in the latest technologies in the practice as well as being easier to bring in new veterinary surgeons onto the managing board. We have had to change the practice bank account details and so anyone paying by direct bank transfer or via internet banking should please note our new details which are as follows. Lloyds Bank, sort code 30-91-43 account number 00295557. Bourton Vale Equine Clinic Ltd If paying directly into our bank account it makes it easy for us to reconcile your payment if you put the Ref number (found next to invoice number on the remittance slip) on your bank payment. All cheques should be made payable to Bourton Vale Equine Clinic Ltd. NEW EQUIPMENT With new investment very much in mind to improve our service to you our clients, we have just taken delivery of the latest state-of-the-art portable digital radiography system. The Eklin system is made in the USA and enables us to take digital images on your own premises for instant diagnosis. While this will not replace the Agfa system already used in the clinic it will enable top quality images to be taken in situations where the horse cannot be moved to our surgery for diagnosis. The images can be seen on a laptop within 4 secs of exposure and the images are of fantastic quality. STAFF NEWS Maternity has forced some staff changes on to our clinic. Firstly our long serving receptionist, Dominique is going on maternity leave and we hope will be back in January. Lucinda Campbell, one of our nurses, is moving to the front office to join the receptionist team. Nurse Jessica Horler-Smith has left to join Brightwells Bloodstock Ltd in Leominster to be closer to long term boyfriend who lives near Ross on Wye and we have 2 new nurses starting in early April namely Morag Buchanan who is a qualified science technician and Hayley Adams who previously was a nurse in the vet practice in nearby Stow on the Wold. We also have a new vet starting at beginning of April. Her name is Adele Lewis and she qualified in July 2005 and has since been working in equine practices in Kent and Derbyshire. Finally congratulations go to one of our vets, Rhona MacKenzie who recently became engaged to fellow Irish vet, Paddy McCooey who is working in Yorkshire - love is in the air at Bourton Vale!! DISEASE OUTBREAKS Please be on your guard against strangles outbreaks. To date this year we have already had one outbreak with several other suspicious cases. Vigilance in spotting the first case and immediate isolation is still the best method of containing an outbreak. We can now get a definate nasal swab result in about 48hrs. The vaccine Strep-E has been withdrawn on safety and efficacy grounds and is unlikely to be released again in the short term so there is no good preventative on the market at the moment. Isolating new horses coming onto the yard is advised for 14 days but few livery yards seem to have adequate isolation facilities and once in a yard, the disease can spread very rapidly from horse to horse. EQUINE INFLUENZA REMINDERS Many of you will have read in the Horse and Hound about the RCVS decision to suspend local veterinary surgeon Alan Walker for a passport vaccination date issue. Do please remember to get your horse’s influenza vaccination done by the due date for your respective competition authority. We do endeavour to send reminders for horses which we have previously vaccinated but the problem can sometimes occur in recently purchased or horses moved to this area. If you let our office know the previous vaccination history of a new purchase, then we will enter these details on our reminder database and you should get a reminder a few days before booster vaccination is required. If your horse goes over a due date, it is likely that your horse will have to start the horse’s vaccination record from a first primary course as required for your particular competition authority as per the HRA, FEI, British Eventing, Riding Club or Pony Club rules. **************************************************added 1st January 2007 ********************************************************** NEW PRODUCTS WORMING: Fort Dodge have just released a very comprehensive worming product based on their successful Equest brand. The latest version is called Equest Pramox and provides single control of roundworms, bots, all 3 species of tapeworms and all stages of encysted small redworm larvae. It has a similar 13 week dosing interval as quoted for Equest and means that strategic twice yearly dosing with Equest in winter and summer and twice yearly dosing with Equest Pramox in spring and autumn provides year-round worm control in horses against all parasite species. It is priced at £15.24 inc Vat. If any clients wish particular worming control based on their particular premises then please contact our office and speak to one of our vets. Remember to check pasture worm burdens regularly by analysis of droppings samples. This inexpensive procedure can give you an idea of how successful your present worming practice is at controlling the problem. Just post or drop into our clinic a small faecal sample from several of your horses just prior to worming date and we can determine the worm egg count on the samples. The cost is £6.00 inc Vat per sample. IRAP: We have recently begun a new treatment, developed in Germany, for Osteoarthritis (joint cartilage problems) and also for ligament/tendon inflammation. Irap, in its most simplistic form, is the production of regenerative and anti-inflammatory proteins by the horse’s own blood cells. This is achieved by taking aseptic blood samples from the horse in an Irap syringe, storing the blood under special conditions, after 24 hours the blood is separated and Autologuous Conditioned Serum (ACS) is retrieved, this is then re-injected into the affected joint or inflammed tendon sheath. ACS offers fast relief from pain and swelling. For futher details and to discuss your horse’s suitability for this treatment please contact Tom Campbell, MRCVS. |
